Our Green Journey

Woodhill Cliff

Our Green Journey

Woodhill Park is a special place, where rolling hills, native flora, and diverse wildlife come together to create a unique and peaceful environment. It offers a tranquil escape for Guests, and it inspires us to support the local biodiversity and preserve natural habitats. From the calls of birds to the scent of the sea air, every part of Woodhill Park reminds us of the need to protect and cherish our natural surroundings. By maintaining this environment, we ensure that future generations can enjoy its beauty and benefit from the many ecological services it provides.

Did you know? In West Runton, a Steppe Mammoth was discovered yielding the oldest and largest fossilised mammoth skeleton ever found in the UK! For those interested in Norfolk’s rich heritage, the 22 mile stretch of Deep History Coast provides a unique journey through ancient geological history, with opportunities to explore cliffs and beaches where prehistoric fossils have been uncovered.

Sustainability at Woodhill Park

The surrounding natural environment is important to us, so we ensure that Woodhill Park is carefully managed to work hand in hand with the local wildlife.

Waste Management

Our new waste management systems on Park include:
Recycling (clean items only) – Cans, plastics, card and paper
Glass – All mixed glass bottles and jars
General – Anything that can’t be recycled

Food Waste - separate bins that get sent to compost.

Furthermore, a low emissions ride-on mower has recently joined the fleet of electric-powered Park transport, and the Park is using fully LED bulbs where possible.

EV Charging

There are four designated charging points located at Woodhill Park in the carpark. Instructions are available on each pedestal; we ask that you are mindful of removing your vehicle once the charge is complete to allow others to use the charging points.

Wildflower Meadow

Ecological Management
To provide a more natural barrier between the main building complex on the Park and the road, we've introduced a tree planting scheme. This scheme includes native species that will be salt-tolerant for the cliff-top location and range in age from two year old whips to larger 6 year old trees.

In 2025, 3000 new saplings were planted on Park as well as a new landscaped area using native planting.

The areas of long grass across the Park have been extended in size and are accompanied by new interpretation boards. However, the most important ecological feature on the Park is the large wildflower meadow and the appropriate management of space.

Following an extensive period of development work at Woodhill Park over the winter, the usual pedestrian access gate to East Runton will remain closed for the 2025 season while we give our new planting time to settle in and thrive.

With the unusually dry spring and early summer, things are taking a bit longer than planned, and we need regular access for watering and care.

We really appreciate your patience and understanding - thanks for helping us look after our environment!

A Longstanding Park, A New Chapter in Conservation

Operating as a campsite since the 1950s, Woodhill Park has evolved to include a mix of touring areas and holiday home plots, along with comprehensive infrastructure and guest facilities. While small-scale tree planting has previously been undertaken, this year we embarked on an ambitious programme of environmental transformation, planting over 3,000 trees and shrubs across Woodhill Park – the most extensive tree planting initiative in our history.

Guided by Expert Planning and Ecological Insight

This initiative has been carried out in accordance with our Landscape and Ecology Management Plan, which identifies suitable species for the Park’s unique environment, along with the appropriate timing, planting methods, and long-term care strategies. The plan carefully considers numerous factors including soil conditions, underground services, visual impact, and long-term biodiversity goals.

As part of this project, we’ve planted a diverse range of native species, including: Holm Oak, Holly, Hawthorn, Hazel, Spindle, Scots Pine, Gorse, Broom and Blackthorn

These species have been selected to establish both tall, specimen trees and rich understorey vegetation – contributing to a multi-layered, resilient, and ecologically valuable landscape.

A Vision for the Future Landscape

Currently, many areas of the Park have limited tree cover – a surprising fact given our name. However, with the successful implementation of this extensive planting project, the landscape will be transformed. The new planting will create a much more diverse and populated tree canopy, ensuring both visual interest and valuable habitats for wildlife.

Over time, guests and wildlife alike will benefit from increased shelter, improved natural screening, and a richer, greener environment.

Enhancing Existing Natural Features

In addition to new planting, we have also improved existing habitats. A well-established native hedgerow, mainly composed of hawthorn, runs along the southern boundary of the western field. Traditionally, this hedge has been maintained at approximately 7 feet, with trimming on both sides.

Our new vision for this hedgerow includes:

  • Allowing it to grow to a height of approximately 12 feet
  • Permitting outward growth on the touring area side to provide enhanced screening and noise protection
  • Maintaining the roadside face to ensure pavement access remains clear
  • Keeping visibility for existing Woodhill Park signage

These changes will increase the hedgerow’s value as a habitat while also improving the experience for guests and enhancing the Park’s visual character.

Committed to a Greener Tomorrow

The Tree-Mendous Wildlife Challenge is just one part of Woodhill Park’s broader environmental strategy. We are proud to be recognised by the David Bellamy Conservation Awards and remain committed to ongoing conservation, sustainability, and biodiversity enhancements throughout the Park. Together with our guests, team, and partners, we are creating a future where our guests can still connect with nature.

Here at Woodhill Park, we are delighted to announce that we have been awarded the David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature Awards for the 'Special Species’ pledge for our work during in 2022. Our sister Park, Kelling Heath Holiday Park, has been awarded not one, but two for “Super Signage” and “Home Sweet Home in 2022.

We have been awarded the prestigious Gold Award from Green Tourism recognising our commitment to protecting the environment, sustainability, conservation, and inspiring our Holiday Homeowners and Guests to connect with nature.  We are committed to reducing our environmental impact by adopting greener practices and encouraging eco-friendly behaviour among our teams and Guests alike. By involving everyone who visits our Parks and informing them of incentives and tips on topics such as waste reduction, wildlife conservation, and energy-saving efforts, we aim to create a shared sense of responsibility for our natural surroundings. Our goal is to not only preserve the beauty of the Parks but also to inspire a connection with nature.
