A Clifftop Haven

Woodhill Park has a very distinctive and special natural environment that needs to be carefully managed in order to be of maximum benefit to wildlife.
Due to the sandy cliff topsoil and salty sea wind, there are only certain species of plants that will thrive. Since 1999 the Park has been operating a specially designed management plan for ts grassland / banked areas.
This has improved the Park as a food source for the huge variety of wildlife that visit or live on the site. Look out for the Sky Larks in late spring, singing on the wing way overhead – these birds nest on the wildflower meadow and can be seen running to their nests on the field. A profusion of wildflowers can be seen from campion to cranes bill, scabious to mallow. All these flowers help to attract insects like the majestic red admiral butterfly. Smaller insects in turn attract small birds and mammals like the harvest mouse – so the chain goes on until you reach the top and catch a glimpse of the resident fox ducking through the hedge after a night of hunting in the long grass.

Please help us to help our wildlife by reporting any unusual creatures so we can update our records. You can also help us by supporting any environmental award schemes that the Park is involved with. These let people know that we manage our environment in such a way that the wildlife of Woodhill will continue to thrive and have a safe home for future generations to enjoy.

David Bellamy Gold Conservation Award 2011 - We are pleased to have retained the Gold Conservation Award acknowledging our continued management of the environment at Woodhill Park.
